The Green (Well Green) in 1863

In 1863 James Thorpe of Beaconfield (Coddington Hall) bought the farm/maltings complex and a number of cottages on The Green from Edward Chivers Bower of Tickhill Castle York for ?11,500. Some parts  were freehold and some were copyhold status.

Surviving deeds show a plan of the Green at that time, listing all the tenants. This also confirms the order in which the census enumerator walked around this area on census night 1861.

By comparing this plan with the one in the 1918 Estate Sale Catalogue (which was based on the 1900 Ordnance Survey Map) we can see that the area hadn’t changed much over that time.
